Excellent reporting on a terribly upsetting and tragic situation. You nailed it on who not to blame - and who is to blame. 👏🏻

Ugh, a sobering read but hits the mark of not blaming the victims and holding the politicians responsible instead. Sorry this all took place when you were overseas vacationing with friends. I saw on your IG you got to spend time in Greece, home of my great grandfather I was named after. 🇬🇷 Welcome home.

Another great analysis Ms. Bassett

Corralling climate change is likely not possible.

Not given that the Senate is likely, barring massive economic catastrophe (which we deficit spend to prevent), is going to be less than 44 Republicans ever.

But, can't we have a new consensus that climate change is real and even if we need to continue our harmful energy sources, drive gas guzzlers, live in sprawl, not eat local, etc etc -- can't we agree to manage better the catastrophic events that climate change brings?!

Like, snowless Northeastern winters, the ice storms, the fast growing Hurricanes, the humid, hot extra 4-6wk in much of the South....like it's been about a decade of that at this point. Can't we agree to fund even another $200 million to detect nutso weather better? It's that proverbial drop in the rounding error bucket when it comes to Pentagon spending that is essentially unchecked and massive.

Even it does not change many outcomes at least we tried. At least we passed a law that could state 4AM Flood warnings need to be smartphone emergency based.

Perhaps this guy you highlight gets it. Perhaps he freaking gets it. Because, looking at their blank faces, the crappy explanations, their reliance on "praying" -- you think about their empty posturing after a mass shooting. And really nothing ever changes. But that at least has an amendment behind it!

And you are correct and beautifully point out, no one asked for this absolute tragedy.
